Day 16 – 30 days: get 8 hours of sleep

Today has been day 16 of my challenge to get 8 hours of sleep for 30 days straight.

Every day I’ll share my FitBit Surge sleep data.

Aside from that, I want to document how I’m doing in terms of changing my habits:

  • No more screens, from 1 hour before bedtime.
  • Go for a 15 minute walk during the day.
  • No coffee after noon.
  • Use my thoughts to get to a place of gratitude before I go to sleep and when I wake up.

Day 16: 6hrs 42min

I did not reach my goal.

I travelled to Budapest last night and went out for a drink with my brother, who’s getting married tomorrow! I arrived back at the apartment a little after midnight and went to sleep at 12:55 according to my Fitbit sleep chart.

I crashed on a couch in our AirBnB apartment.

It was way too hot.

Way too uncomfortable.

But it all is balanced out by the fact that I’m here with my family.

Every day, new people are arriving. We go around the city, picking people up, showing them the way, seeing the people we love. It’s amazing. Every single thing is worth the lack of sleep. So:

No more screens, 1 hour before bedtime

I did not reach my goal.

I was on WhatsApp at night, communicating with my family in Budapest, some in Holland, friends in Belgium and the US and my girlfriend in Brazil.

Again, no mindless screentime here but actually using my technology for relationships but still not an hour free of screens, so no goal.

Go for a 15 minute walk

I did not reach my goal.

I did not go for a 15 minute “calm-down” walk.

However, I was active during the day. Like trampoline jumping in the morning, carrying suitcases in the afternoon, walking around at the airport and walking around in Budapest.

It was good because I was moving and I was being present, and able to give it my full attention and enjoy all of it. But it doesn’t fit this description of my 15 minute walk, so I did not reach my goal.

No coffee after noon

I reached my goal.

Just had a coffee in the morning at my brothers house.

I was tempted to get one more when we were travelling, but I was able to just choose water.

Be in a place of gratitude

I did reach my goal.

Again, I did not consciously take time to reflect or anything but I was definitely in a good place, being around family all day, hanging out with my brother at night. So I am counting today as a yes.

There were several moments in which I really felt genuinely happy and grateful for what I was experiencing in that moment and in the greater span of my life.
