The average Facebook user
I’ve noticed that there is a ton of misinformation and misinterpretation on the subject of ads on Facebook between everyday Facebook users like you, me and your friends. A lot of people worry about their privacy. With this series of blog posts, I will give you an inside look into the advertising world of Facebook. Ultimately giving you the knowledge and information about Facebook Ads that you need to understand how your data is being used for advertising.
Entrepreneurs and marketers
Entrepreneurs and marketers who are thinking of using Facebook as a marketing channel: These blog posts will lay out the advertising process in detail so you can use this knowledge to become great at advertising your own business, product or idea.
How does Facebook choose who sees an ad?
“Audience targeting” is the magic word here. Facebook uses data from their users profiles to create certain types of personas. When an advertizer wants to target a certain type of “persona”, it can make use of Facebook’s user data to find that person and show them an ad.

So whether or not you get to see an ad, all depends on whether you fit the “image” or “persona” that the advertizer is targeting.
Targeting options
There’s basically 4 ways that advertizers can target their ads to people:
- Location targeting – the city you live in
- Demographics – your age, gender and language
- Interests – things Facebook suggests you are interested in
- Behavior – your online behavior
In this series of blog posts you’ll learn how it’s possible that your Facebook profile gets picked to show an ad to. You’ll also learn how to create and target ads yourself so that you can use Facebook Ads for your business.
The first post is all about location targeting. All the other targeting options will be covered in upcoming posts.
I’ve set up many successful Facebook campaigns for all kinds of companies, ranging from fashion to construction businesses. Feel free to talk to me if you have any questions or ideas for your business.
