Day 8: 30 days – get 8 hours of sleep

Today has been day 8 of my challenge to get 8 hours of sleep for 30 days straight.

Every day I’ll share my FitBit Surge sleep data.

Aside from that, I want to document how I’m doing in terms of changing my habits:

  • No more screens, from 1 hour before bedtime.
  • Go for a 15 minute walk during the day.
  • No coffee after noon.
  • Use my thoughts to get to a place of gratitude before I go to sleep and when I wake up.

Day 8: 6hrs 39min

I did not get 8 hours of sleep.

I only really went to bed a little after midnight after coming home late around 11PM from a trip to Holland because my car had broke down.

Good thing: My friend and photographer Fred & Erick was able to pick me up and drive me to Antwerp.

Here’s a beautiful shot from that night:

So I got home at around 11, shuffled around for another hour, ordening some stuff in my room and listening to a podcast. And before I knew it, it was already past midnight, I kinda knew I wouldn’t be able to get those 8 hours today.

No more screens, 1 hour before bedtime

Goal reached?

Yes. But no.

I was just tidying up and listening to a podcast on my speakerset but I actually count it as a no. I feel like inundating my brain with external impulses whether through video, facebook or a podcast is kind of similar. However, it doesn’t tire my eyes so I guess it’s a little less worse.

The most important lesson for me here however is that while I was convinced that I needed to hear this podcast, I really didn’t. But my mind can take me places where it’s very convinced I will find the next big fix, or thing.

Go for a 15 minute walk

Goal reached?

Yes. I walked a little after noon and a lot more at night.

How was it?

It was different, because I was working from home, in Holland, because my car broke down.

So there was no set schedule like I’m used to at the office. But I still got out there. Pretty easy to keep it up so far.

No coffee after noon

Goal reached?

Yes.

How was it?

I had an espresso in the early morning but no more after that.

For the rest… Quite easy to stick to water and tea.

Be in a place of gratitude

Goal reached?

Lol why is this even a goal? It’s just a slap in my face, why do I slap myself in the face all the time?

Aiiii I guess it’s the hardest lesson to learn.

No, I did not reach my goal. I was not calm and/or grateful but rather stressed out.

How was it?

So I wasn’t feeling the best, I had a long day, my car broke down and I got home late and I was husslin’ around in my room, listening to a podcast with a lot of stress, so it was horrible!

(by the way you gotta watch “Silent Library” on YouTube it’s hilarious if you’re in the mood. That’s where the GIF is from)
