day 30 of my sleep challenge

Day 30 – 30 days: get 8 hours of sleep

Thirty days ago, I started with this idea to challenge myself to get 8 hours of sleep so I could live a fuller life.

I have gone through 30 days now and I have shared a lot.

But I have also kept a lot of things private.

Some other things I have been wanting to share, but it would just be easier to share these insights and ideas as I wrap up this experiment.

That’s why I will write a recap of my experiences with this 30 day sleep challenge with:

  • The one struggle during these 30 days that has been undocumented
  • The effects of the habits that I have tried on my life
  • What I will certainly bring from this experience to the rest of my life
  • An incredible story which will explain why I’ve been a little mysterious about the reasons for me staying up, researching online and working on my computer at night.

I share my practical insights and results in this post.

And the real reason for starting this sleep challenge in this post.

But today, we still have day 30 to cover:

Today has been day 30 of my challenge to get 8 hours of sleep for 30 days straight.

THE LAST DAY! I waited a couple of days to synchronize with the actual calendar days, so today is august 30th. Since day 29 was wednesday august 26th, I have thursday (27th of august), friday (28th of august) and saturday (29th of august) to pick from as my “day 30”.

I’ll pick the “real” day 30 as my thirtieth day but I’ll also add screenshots of my sleep stats from the days after that.

Every day I’ll share my FitBit Surge sleep data. Aside from that, I want to document how I’m doing in terms of changing my habits:

  • No more screens, from 1 hour before bedtime.
  • Go for a 15 minute walk during the day.
  • No coffee after noon.
  • Use my thoughts to get to a place of gratitude before I go to sleep and when I wake up.

Day 30: 5hrs 40min

I did not reach my goal.

Thursday night, I went to sleep very late. I was up after soccer practice at night, researching things on the internet, watching videos.. I’d love to share what I was looking for, but I will when the time is right.

The fact of the matter is: I horribly failed to get 8 hours of sleep and ended my 30 days with a 5 hour 40 minute night of sleep.

By the way: here’s the other 2 nights (friday to saturday night and saturday to sunday night)

No more screens, 1 hour before bedtime

I did not reach my goal.

As I was researching online, I used my laptop and I stared at the screen all the time. I am using a pretty nice app called Flux (Mac app) though which makes it muuuuch easier on the eyes.

Go for a 15 minute walk

I did not reach my goal.

I did not go for a walk outside during lunch, or any other time during the day while I was at the office.

Here’s my step data for the other two days too:

No coffee after noon

I reached my goal.

Keep going strong.

Be in a place of gratitude

I did not reach my goal.

I chose to work on researching instead of creating time to calm down so I went to bed because I was really tired.

But wait! There’s more!

Like I said in the intro: next week I’ll post a new blogpost sharing all the nitty gritty details, insights and stories about this 30 day sleep challenge.
