Day 22 – 30 days: get 8 hours of sleep

Today has been day 22 of my challenge to get 8 hours of sleep for 30 days straight.

I had another day of work at the office, followed by the second Skype call with Mark Shapiro at night and a mix of unscheduled researching, planning, learning and conversing with a friend. I ended up literally falling asleep at 2:30AM.

Every day I’ll share my FitBit Surge sleep data. Aside from that, I want to document how I’m doing in terms of changing my habits:

  • No more screens, from 1 hour before bedtime.
  • Go for a 15 minute walk during the day.
  • No coffee after noon.
  • Use my thoughts to get to a place of gratitude before I go to sleep and when I wake up.

Day 22: 6hrs 1min

I did not reach my goal.

It was a long day. After yesterdays short night sleep, it’s definitely starting to like pour over into the next day.

I’m more tired when my alarm wakes me, obviously. But it’s more noticeable.

Today I had a full day of work. At 8PM I had a Skype call scheduled with my friend Mark in Los Angeles to talk about life, vision, and marketing.

I also scheduled to do some research at night for a HUGE project I’ll reveal to you soon.

At 11PM I had payed and registered for an online workshop webinar about Facebook Marketing.

During all of this, I was hanging out with my friend so it was a combination of too many things in too little time.

I got home at 1AM after stopping by the nightshop to get some groceries (because who finds the time to do that during the day?)

No more screens, 1 hour before bedtime

I  did not reach my goal.

I literally fell asleep with my phone screen on because I was talking on WhatsApp to my girlfriend in Brazil.

I normally am really good at shutting down my phone and the conversations on WhatsApp at night but not this time.

And it proves that it is not beneficiary for either of the parties involved in the conversation.

At one point in the conversation I was waiting for a reply and decided to “just close my eyes for a second”…

You know this feeling?

You’re like: “No, yeah, sure, I’ve got this. My eyes just hurt a little. Let me just close my eyes for a second here so I’ll be able to look at my screen again in 10 seconds”.

This is what happened:

Next thing I know, it’s several hours later and the lights are all on, my phone is still open at the conversation screen and my girlfriend is left puzzled, thinking: “Hey, why is he not responding all of a sudden?”

I imagine her being like this:

puzzled

Go for a 15 minute walk

I reached my goal.

I went for a relaxing little stroll around the neighbourhood a little later in the afternoon this time. At around 3:30PM.

No coffee after noon

I reached my goal.

Easy game.

Be in a place of gratitude

I did not reach my goal.

I was all over the place last night.

Tired, inspired, chaotic.

I put on a podcast late at night when I was driving home which I continued listening to at home and also took my phone to bed to talk on WhatsApp.

Typical information overload 😉

What’s ironic is that I am better able to handle that information if I had a solid streak of 8 hours of sleep behind me! It’s so clear and obvious, yet so hard to do!

I feel like I’m doing well with this challenge, but also feel like I’m nowhere near mastering this art at the end of these 30 days (which we’re nearing).

For now, stay tuned for some big things to come.
