Day 17 – 30 days: get 8 hours of sleep

Today has been day 17 of my challenge to get 8 hours of sleep for 30 days straight.

Every day I’ll share my FitBit Surge sleep data.

Aside from that, I want to document how I’m doing in terms of changing my habits:

  • No more screens, from 1 hour before bedtime.
  • Go for a 15 minute walk during the day.
  • No coffee after noon.
  • Use my thoughts to get to a place of gratitude before I go to sleep and when I wake up.

Day 17: 6hrs 35min

I did not reach my goal.

I had to wake up early this morning because we are getting ready for the wedding today.

Last night, we had dinner and went for one drink afterwards and then went home.

I read a little bit before falling asleep, I was so tired from not sleeping enough, walking around all day in the heat, and eating pretty badly.

Like seriously, it’s so hot these days here:

I took a screenshot of the sleep chart on my phone, through Fitbit’s Android App and it shows what a restless night I’ve had.

Look at all those blue, restless bars :O

It’s funny though, that I seem to have slept pretty quietly in the early morning. I would guess I’d start being more awake by then, but it doesn’t seem to be like that.

No more screens, 1 hour before bedtime

I reached my goal.

We went for a drink, walked home and I read a book for the last 20 minutes before bed. My phone’s battery died, so I just plugged it in and didn’t even turn it on before going to bed.

Go for a 15 minute walk

I did not reach my goal.

This is a tough one to gauge though, because I am not exactly sure when to count this as a goal.

I think I’ve meant it as a 15 minute walk, without doing anything, without a direction, just to calm down, during the day.

So as you can see I’ve walked a lot, all day. But I’m not gonna count it, because they were all walks with a purpose: going to the store, going to the restaurant, going to this, picking up that, rushing to get this.

So I feel like this 15 minute exercise really only counts when I make time in my day to go for a 15 minute walk, WITHOUT having to go somewhere, without having to pick something up. Basically, without that pushy feeling of having to be efficient.

Here’s a video of our trip so far: Day 1 and 2 of our family trip to Budapest!

No coffee after noon

I reached my goal.

I only had a coffee in the morning with my brother at a coffee bar on the streets of Budapest.

I was definitely tempted to get one more in the afternoon, when we went there again, but I chose to get mineral water instead.

Be in a place of gratitude

I did not reach my goal.

I’ve been a little less strict with this one, than I’ve been with the 15 minute walk one.

I mean, I cut myself some slack when I’ve had a good day and I’m enjoying the moment and feeling grateful in that moment, I count this as a yes.

But to be honest, that’s not what the original challenge said 😛

It’s about consciously taking time to guide my thoughts and think about all the things I’m grateful for.

I did not make time for this, last night.

Like with the walking, I did a lot of things, and I’ve felt happy in the process, which is also really good, but it is not exactly what my challenge was set out to do, so I’m putting a “no”, here.
